Our story

The Northlight origin story

As a new parent, there was one question always on my mind:

Are they breathing?

I remember the middle-of-the-night worry with my daughter. I’d check the video monitor, watching for the tiny rise and fall of her chest. Sometimes I'd need to go over and feel it for myself.

The solutions I found involved screens, apps, alerts, or more information to make sense of. I really didn’t want all that at 2am. I wanted something simpler, a way to check in on my daughter with just a glance.

We didn’t set out to build another baby monitor. We started with a different question:

What if reassurance didn’t require a screen?

What if something as natural as a baby’s breathing could become a soft light beside the bed—something a parent could understand with a single glance?

That idea became Northlight.

A small clip attaches gently near the baby’s diaper and senses natural breathing movement. In the parent’s room, a warm bedside lamp reflects that rhythm through light.

No scrolling. No dashboard. No data to decode.

You glance. You exhale. You go back to sleep.

The first version of the idea was called Soba Sleep and used sensors integrated into baby clothing. As we developed it, we realized the experience needed to be even simpler and more practical. The sensor became a gentle, almost weightless clip that could work with the clothing parents already own. The lamp became the heart of the system: a calming object designed for the nightstand, not a piece of clinical equipment.

That evolution also clarified what Northlight was truly about.

With backgrounds in engineering and manufacturing, we understood that the technology had to work reliably. But as parents, we knew that technical performance alone would never be enough. The deeper problem wasn’t a lack of information. It was the emotional experience of checking—the friction, the overstimulation, and the feeling that peace of mind required another app and a medical degree.

So we built Northlight around a different belief: the best technology can disappear into the moment.

It can be quiet.

It can be warm.

It can feel human.

Northlight is being developed as a wellness-focused breathing awareness system—not a medical device or a replacement for supervision. Its purpose is simple: to make one of parenthood’s hardest moments feel a little softer.

Northlight began in the dark, with parents holding their own breath while watching for one more rise and fall.

We’re building it so that moment can end differently—with a warm light, a quiet exhale, and one less reason to stay awake.
